Burger and Lobster @ Raffles Hotel

Ok, so this was an 'atas' (similar connotation to high-class) tea session. Hey, once in a while, it's ok to pamper ourselves. Nevertheless, it was rather rare for us to be having a meal at 3.30pm. But then, it's Happy Hour (3pm to 6pm) at Burger and Lobster too!

Tip: If you're taking a cab/grab, drop at Raffles Hotel Seah Street side. Otherwise, it was a one big round walk to Burger and Lobster.

The usual temperature taking and Safe Entry check-in before admission. Was late, hence the group had already ordered and started by then. Ambiance was cosy and I enjoyed the view of the lovely looking bar.

lovely bar view

Besides admiring the bar, of course I'd be trying the cocktails. Cocktails at $10 during Happy Hours, yay! To start, had a South Side. My first time trying it. Gin based with Angostura Bitters, lemon and a mint leaf. Refreshing.

Old Fashioned

Ok, let's get some munchies with the drinks. Friend had already finished with her lobster roll and she enjoyed it tremendously. I went with the flow and had a small bite with whatever else that was on  the table. The Salted Egg Yolk Baby Squid was good. Not too tiny, tender yet with a soft chew.  The coating/batter of the salted egg yolk was tasty and goes so well with the cocktails. Best eaten when it was still hot. Lovely!

Another friend had Lobster Thermidor and it looked so pretty. There's something about gratinated cheese that looked inviting. Served with garlic toast.

I had a bite of the garlic toasties, and because we ordered the Lobster Rosti, I made a small bite by breaking off a corner of the garlic toast, placed a good amount of guacamole and some lobster meat on it. Hehe.

say cheese~

Talking about Lobster Rosti, here's a pic of it. Light tasting and value for money.

The place tends to get busier after 5pm on weekends. A good place with $10 Happy Hour cocktails, and lobster rolls.

Humpback @ Bukit Pasoh

Drinking place and oysters! That's what I'd call Humpback. Operated by the young, the vibe was casual and the expected bar pricing. Tapas-sized, so order up. Drinks at Happy Hour (till 8pm) was around $15. Not exactly happy with that, but oh well.

On Mondays, they have oysters whole-day Happy Hour. That means, $2 to $3 per shell. WoOohOoo! But first of all, do get their bread and dip. It was really yummy. The bread was thick and served warm. And a glorious spread of that spicy dip. Yasss! Bread without the dip is $7 and served with olive oil and some cut butter.

Bread & Dip @$12

If you're in a group of 5 or 6, you might be ordering most of the food on the menu, like what we did. Let's see which are the plates that we liked the most. The octopus was well-executed and everyone can have one or two slices each. Chewy yet tender, that was the texture that we were looking for. Well seasoned and charred just enough to have that smokey hint.

Octopus @$26

And of course, one must have their greens. There were 4 options listed under 'Garden' section of the menu, but I think we got one that's not exactly in the menu. They have ice-lettuce so we had that.

Salad @$16
Iberico Pork with cauliflower @$28

Of course, not forgetting the oysters. We had the Hama Hama, Blue Pool, Sea Cow and Eld Inlet. Cae was right. Kind of hard to tell which flavour was which. But it was all enjoyable. Some just had more of that briny juice in its shell but probably 'coz some shells had more depth while some was shallow.

oysters galore @$39 (HH)

For other shellfish, there's razor clams as well. These were served cold and rather small portions, in my opinion. Would trade these anytime for the oysters. On hindsight, the two servings of razor clams, could get us another round of 3 oysters per pax.

Razor Clams @$16

If you're hankering for some deep fried stuff, there's mac & cheese balls. One serving is 5 pieces. Could they do additional if you have a group of 6? The answer was a resounding no.

Best and most expensive dish of the night? The lobster roll! Served in a well-buttered soft bread roll, topped with firm sweet lobster meat and a side of fries. The seasoning on the fries were a bit erratic but the lobster roll itself was good. Yummy!

Lobster Roll @$45

Since it was a girls' night out, we couldn't leave without dessert! Hahaa! Actually, by now, one would be full from all the food. We had about 10 plates (excluding the oysters) shared amongst the 6 of us.

The salted caramel mousse that came with the churros was overly salty. Was that to compensate on the sweet churros? Gosh. If you had tried it, do let me know what you think of it. Maybe, it was a one-off thing?

Panna Cotta @$11
Churros @$10

Since there were some hits and misses, Purple Taste recommends the freshly shucked oysters (during happy hour for happier pricing), the bread & dip (so that you won't go home feeling hungry), the octopus, a plate of salad, the delicious lobster roll (when you feel like pampering your date and yourself) and a drink. For the teetotaller, there's hot tea or apple juice.

Expect to spend about $80 per pax (with one drink).

Thank you Cae, Mya, Bel, Tiara and Jen for the girls' night out!

Ps: The chairs are all pretty high and could be cumbersome for the vertically challenged like me

Platypus Lobster Shack @ China Square Central

Located at Nankin Row of China Square Central. Getting there was a breeze. Took the MRT to Outram, change to North East Line to Chinatown. Alighted and went up to Exit E/F and head towards the direction of Hong Lim Complex.

Am seeking out Platypus Lobster Shack as lobster roll seems popular in Singapore at the moment. Especially since that comparison article in The Straits Times last Sunday. Why Platypus Lobster Shack? Mainly because of its reasonable price point.

signs of good things to come

Not quite sure what's the situation so made a reservation, for just in case. Table for 2 on a weekend evening 630pm.

The place was rather small and cosy. Some tables are set as close as possible, leaning towards communal style dining, but not quite.

not quite share table

Most are here for its lobster rolls, though one may also want to order small plates (I'll share with you why). There's desserts as well.

Got a carafe of Momo-Lychee Ale, which was a simple cocktail of  Mexican beer and peach. It did look different from the ones at Platypus Test Kitchen last year. Not too sure if at Lobster Shack, this drink was supposed to come with the lychee fruit and mint leaves, or just plain naked like the ones we got.

Momo-Lychee Ale @$10++

Nevertheless, it was worth drinking. Sweet, fruity and thirst quenching. Serves 4 small glasses. For non-drinkers, fret not. A bottle of cold water would be placed on your table immediately, upon seated.

drink up, it's water!

How can one not order the Crustacean Bowl? Especially if it comes with a statement that read - Limited to 12 bowls each day. So exciting!

The bowl was served pretty fast, within minutes and what a beauty it was!

crustacean bowl @$26++

caviar, poached lobster, char-grilled cheddar cheese, uni creme, chervil leaves, honey ponzu

One word of advice? Order it as a main! The portion is not alot. It may even be too little for some.

Shared the plate with my bro and both of us enjoyed this dish. Clean, healthy tasting and the smokey flavour of the grilled cheddar was interesting. Not too much, but enough to tease. The bowl had adequate lobster meat from various parts, and the meatier ones were sweet. Topping it with caviar gave it a luxurious feel. Well, anything with lobster already felt luxurious~

have you seen this guy?

The lobster roll did take quite a while to come. Glad we ordered the rice.

The Traditional @$22++ (set)
grilled buns, oh yes
butter poached lobster meat, roasted garlic mayo, chives and sea salt

The weight of the meat in lobster roll was good. Felt like it was value for money and of substance when held in the palm. The roasted garlic mayo didn't taste quite garlicky though. Overall, The Traditional had a very light taste. As a set, it came with salad leaves and potato chips. Couldn't quite taste the dressing in the salad though. Chips were a mix of spicy and vinegary.

Saw that Nicholas was around, so approached him with a question. Was curious to find know what is the most popular rolls that customers would usually order here.  Got to know from him that most locals seemed to prefer the Spicy Roasted Garlic and The Traditional. Am guessing that for those whom are trying for the first time, will likely get The Traditional. Akin to like, trying the original first? That was what my bro had told me when he made his choice. Thanks Nicholas for the snippet of info, and sorry if my approach was kind of sudden and out of the blue! Oops.

Actually, am much appreciative of all the folks in the food industry. Thanks to you guys, we got to taste good food without having to fly all over the globe. Glad that I finally had an inkling of how lobster rolls would taste like.

Paid about $34 per pax for this meal.
