[Food Tasting] Happy Chinese New Year @ Café Lodge YWCA Fort Canning Lodge

Café Lodge is located in YWCA Fort Canning Lodge which is near Dhoby Ghaut MRT. It is walkable if you head towards Singapore Shopping Centre direction, go past Innotel and turn left and walk past Haw Par Glass Tower. All in all, about 10 minutes leisure walk from Dhoby Ghaut MRT.

Was there to get acquainted with the food offered at Café Lodge, and their Lunar New Year menu. Café Lodge has curated an 8-course “Fortune Menu” and the 9-course "Prosperity Menu" which are priced at $498++ and $698++ respectively, to celebrate the Year of the Boar.

More information below:

Had the good fortune to sample some dishes from the Prosperity Menu. The bowl of Superior Broth with Four Treasures was generously loaded with fish maw, crab meat, conpoy (dried scallops) and chinese mushrooms. Chef Vincent shared with us that the food at Cafe Lodge is cooked with reduced salt concept. Oh my, I could not tell as the broth tasted seriously good with the ingredients' flavours melded well together into a bowl of yummy goodness.

When the plate of braised Chinese mushrooms with dried oysters with black moss (fatt choy) was brought out, first impression was "wow...such plump looking mushrooms". The shrooms were tender and easy to eat, with overall light flavours from this plate.

Pumpkin Rice

Loved the crispy fried silverfish garnishing the pumpkin rice as it gave a good contrasting crunch against the soft pumpkin flesh and firm grains.

The dessert in the Prosperity Menu is fried Nian Gao with yam. All handmade by Chef Vincent Lee and his team. Squares of the treat were deep-fried to golden brown. Each bite into those crispy skin was like music to the ears and the yam was light in flavour till it meet the thin layer of the delicious nian gao. This dessert is available for take-away too.

Buffet

Café Lodge has a daily buffet for lunch and dinner, hence I couldn't resist sampling it's local and Asia's favourite dishes that night such as beef rendang, fried chicken, steamed fish with soy sauce, braised duck that came complete with fragrant yam rice. How cool is that!

Here are some photos of the buffet items:
fruits salad
appetizing vermicelli
fried chicken
stir-fried french beans
beef rendang
braised duck
yam rice
braised egg and tofu

Here is what my plate looked like:

fried chicken, lor bak, steamed fish, braised duck and yam rice, stir-fried green beans
For dessert, there is a small selection of kuehs and hot dessert such as green bean soup or pulut hitam. If you see any kueh kosui on the buffet table, do get some. It was delicious!

must get kueh kosui

In my opinion, Café Lodge serves homely comfort food with a touch of rustic flavours.

The Café is able to seat 180 people and good for large group functions. The profits from the Café will be used to funds YWCA community services for the poor and needy.

[Media Invite] Uoshin Zushi @ 82 Amoy Street

This stretch of road has plenty of dining and drinking places. The likes of Bochinche, Birds of a Feather, Sugarhall, Jigger and Pony are amongst the brands one could find along Amoy Street. If you're in the mood for Japanese food before the drinking starts, then Uoshin Zushi could be your choice.

Was invited to try their foods recently, and it was promising. The foods served at Uoshin Zushi is not the most authentic Japanese cuisine as it has elements of fusion in it. Think Japanese-themed family-style food. Even its music is mostly English songs.

Its interior is wood-heavy and has a cosy comfortable atmosphere. The dining area is spacious and suitable for large groups gathering, as well as intimate dinner for two.

We started the evening with appetisers of edamame and deep fried salmon skin. The edamame was plump and nicely salted. The salmon skin was interesting as it was of an unexpected colour of light golden brown. Relatively thinner than most salmon skin that I've tasted!

Since the side dishes are good with alcoholic drink, they do have Sapporo draft for just $8 for half pint, while there's a promo of $10 1-for-1. That's a no brainer of which is the better deal! So do go with your buddies!

Sashimi lovers, you'll enjoy the next one. A beautiful bowl of Natsu Sashimi (for 2 pax). It has two slices each of salmon, salmon belly, tuna, swordfish and scallop topped with tobiko. The version that we had was topped up for the third person. The additional top-up would be counted at ala-carte pricing.

On the day of our visit, the Chef had decided to replace the tuna with yellowtail as the shipment of tuna that day was not satisfactory. The swordfish was also replaced with amaebi. Not an issue as I love yellowtail sashimi! The scallop was very very good as it was plump and sweet. More scallops please!

The Natsu sashimi was hugely satisfying. If you need something more filling, the potato salad could be an option. It was mixed with plenty of hard boiled egg, well seasoned and topped with tobiko. Lovely and one just can't stop eating it!

If all the cold food is getting to you, why not warm up with a small bowl of miso soup. Nothing special from its appearance as it looked like any other regular miso soup. However, there is a difference as it tasted somewhat sweeter and not so 'edgy'. Reason being, this restaurant uses dashi to prepare its miso soup and while it drives up the cost, the brother and sister pair running the restaurant would like Uoshin Zushi customers to enjoy the premium ingredients while maintaining it as reasonably as possible.

If you like aburi sushi as much as I do, then the next plate is for you. A beautiful 5-piece torched salmon with various toppings such as mentaiko, sweet sauce, mayonaise, ginger and black pepper that promises to tantalize the tastebuds. I think I'll get two plates of these please, thank you.

There's also grilled salmon fin with sea-salt on the menu, and these are the fin parts with fatty bits. Two pieces per plate.

There was one new item that we got to try. The salted egg tempura with garlic fried rice. The tempura consists of one prawn tempura and two pieces of vegetable tempura (brinjal and sweet potato). The batter was crunchy and slightly thicker and well coated with the salted egg sauce. A child of our friend tried the tempura and enjoyed it! It would have been great if there was less oil on the plate.

For dessert, we sampled the match and goma ice-cream. Didn't expect the ice-cream to be topped with red bean paste though.

All in all, Uoshin Zushi serves lovely affordable, thick slices of sashimi and very good aburi salmon sushi. Recommend the sashimi, fried salmon skin, potato salad, and not forgetting the garlic fried rice.

Special thanks to Nicole and Uoshin Zushi for hosting and HGW for the invite.

Fumée @ Millenia Walk

Fumée has a good deal going on for the 2017 festive season. Together with Hungrygowhere, diners could enjoy this HungryDeal where $38++ gives you a 3-course set meal with a complimentary glass of bubbly!
Had tried the set meal and it was well worth the money. Say no more and let's look at the photos. The set meal has two items to choose from for each of its appetiser, main and dessert.

For appetiser, choose from the luxurious Foie Gras Salad or the Smoked Salmon Gravlax. The salad was nicely dressed so both were equally tasty. It was hard to choose one because the gravlax wowed with the generous amount of salmon but the creamy, sinfully wobbly foie gras won.

For the mains, one could choose the Chicken Roulade with Silky Mash or Prime Rib with roasted Butternut and Chestnut. Eh, sounds like turkey stuffings when I saw butternut and chestnut.

Chicken Roulade tasted healthy and the meat was rather gentle and not dry. The flavours from the mushroom sauce was good and the silky mash was truly enjoyable.

Chicken Roulade with Silky Mash
The Prime Rib was nicely done with a pink center. Only lightly seasoned to enjoy the true beefy taste of the meat. Those prized butter topping the meat was exquisite.

Of course, all of these ought to be enjoyed with a glass of wine. We had a French Sauvignon Blanc. Drinkable and light.

And, for desserts, there is a choice of Toffee Pudding or Christmas Cake. My preference was to end it lightly with the Christmas Cake. Toffee Pudding was nice and tasted akin to Sticky Date pudding but it was a tad heavy. A cup of coffee would pair so well with the Christmas Cake.

[Media Invite] Jin Fine Dining @ 76 Telok Ayer Street

Jin Fine Dining serves fine, quality Japanese food and is located within Amoy Hotel. Nearest MRT is Telok Ayer MRT (DTL). Turn to the right towards the vicinity of Far East Square if you are at the Telok Ayer street. Head towards Amoy Hotel and you'll find the entrance to the restaurant.

Jin Fine Dining offers omakase, sets as well as ala-carte dining options. I heard they bring in their fresh seafood every Tuesdays and Fridays. Was there on a Thursday and enjoyed the freshness of the produce, especially the sashimi platter. It was quite a fanfare when the platter was brought in, with smoke emitting the dry ice. Overall, the plate had one whole seabream, thinly sliced and arranged with salmon, maguro and hamachi. Just absolutely love the firm hamachi and maguro. Satisfying all the sashimi cravings at one go!

sashimi platter @$128
glorious plate
The sashimi platter was good for 5 to 6 pax, and it has my favourite fish - hamachi (yellowtail).

If you prefer carpaccio-style, they do have the Kanpachi Truffle Carpaccio. Trivia: What's the difference between hamachi and kanpachi? Both belong to the same fish family and kanpachi is also known as amberjack fish while hamachi is yellowtail. Kanpachi is less fatty in comparison with its cousin.

Kanpachi Truffle Carpaccio @$30
The carpaccio was nicely plated with chrysanthemum petals and black truffle shavings. A tiny flavour-bomb, this one.

I was surprised by their rendition of buta kakuni. Often times, we get small chunks of well-braised pork belly for the kakuni but at Jin's, it was a large chunk of meat. Just slightly smaller than dong-po meat (东坡肉). The surprise element was taken up another notch when this piece of wobbly meat was placed in the mouth. Juicy, savoury flavour that melts in your mouth. Doesn't feel greasy at all. Great execution.

Buta Kakuni @$30
Tempura Mori @$22
Kimchi Nabe @$23
Tura Nabe @$28

For soups, one could get the Tura Nabe or the Kimchi Nabe; cod fish or the pork belly kimchi hotpot. :Portion was good enough to be shared amongst 3 pax as a side-dish. Of course, if you are thirsty, then there's a selection of sake and drinks available. Cold beer could be the remedy after a hard day's work.

kanpai~
For carbs, we tried the Iro Iro Maki that's colourful, and the Jin Maki. The Iro Iro has slices of sashimi and avocado wrapping around the prawn tempura in sushi rice, then topped with caviar. The Jin Maki was crunchy fish skin within the rice and wrapped with salmon sashimi. Go for both!

Iro Iro Maki @$20
Jin Maki @$16

Lastly, if you are still feeling peckish, how about a bow of garlic rice to complete the deal? We ended up being super-full after that bowl of garlic rice but one just couldn't help but to eat it. It was just so tasty.
